In summary the ATEX European directive requires employers / users to prevent and protect against explosions from a powder coating plant.
From July 1st 2003 all new installed plants with automatic guns must comply with the directives.
If, after 30 June 2003, any modification, extension or restructuring is undertaken, the employer shall take the necessary steps to ensure that these comply with the minimum requirements set out in the Directive.
From 30th June 2006, all existing plants must comply with the ATEX directive.
In order to comply with the directive this means that action is required on all automatic powder coating plants before July 2006.
